You may think you've seen the city of Hartford...but have you really felt it?
Hartford resident Ray Shaw's photography captures the tones, shapes, and energy of Connecticut's capital city. Through the lens, he expresses that which words cannot convey, and tells the stories on the faces of both people and places. His technical explorations are always in the service of truth and emotion, and are a means of digging ever deeper into our shared experiences and ideas.
His photographic representation of Hartford is raw and authentic, which is exactly what inspired the Upward team to name Ray Shaw as Upward's 2020 Artist In Residence at their downtown coworking, office, and meeting hub.
Shaw is the second local artist to be selected for Upward's Artist In Residence Program, which features rotating works from a single artist over the course of a calendar year. The program's mission is to serve as a “home base” for the Artist In Residence to display their favorite works or new pieces, while also providing the Upward community with an in-house gallery of work from which they can derive inspiration and directly purchase for their office or home. Shaw's residency follows that of esteemed multimedia abstract artist, fellow Hartford resident, Miguel Jose Matos.
While Shaw's work vividly captures the hues of Hartford, his inaugural Artist In Residence collection is presented in stark black and white contrasting tones. "We wanted to kick off the New Year featuring Ray's striking work in a very dramatic, captive way," says Jess Morin, Upward's Marketing Manager and co-curator of the Upward Gallery. "We are beyond excited to showcase his full-color photographs in tandem with the onset of spring and summer colors throughout the city."
The Artist In Residence collection is displayed on Upward’s upper-level of the mezzanine coworking, office, and conference room space from January through December 2020. All works are available for purchase via the marketplace on the Upward Community mobile app for iOS and Android.
Please join us in welcoming Ray Shaw as Upward's annual Artist In Residence at the Q1 2020 Opening Reception of Upward Gallery on Wednesday evening, January 22nd, from 6-8pm.
About the artist:
Ray Shaw's fascination with photography began at the exact moment he beheld a photo shared to the class by his 11th-grade geometry teacher. It was a photo from a European vacation. The image was an artistic representation of an urban area. The feelings expressed in both the total picture and details struck and stayed with Ray.
After graduating from college, he worked many years in local and network television but photography remains his first and greatest love.
Ray's photography has appeared in The Boston Globe, New Britain Herald, Bristol Press, Newington Crier, Manchester Journal Inquirer, Middletown Press, Hartford Courant (iTowns section), “One Day USA”, The State of Connecticut Tourism Guide, and on television station NBC30.
Among other freelance work, he is currently shooting performances in the Autorino Center for the Arts and Humanities at the University of Saint Joseph.
